Hydroxyethyl cellulose has important applications in the field of latex paint,mainly reflected in the following aspects:
thickening
Improving viscosity:Hydroxyethyl cellulose can significantly increase the viscosity of latex paint,giving it a suitable consistency.In this way,latex paint will not flow due to being too thin during construction,which is conducive to maintaining the uniformity of the paint film thickness,especially when applied on vertical surfaces.It can effectively prevent sagging and make the paint film smoother.
Adjusting rheological properties:It can make latex paint exhibit pseudo plastic fluid characteristics,that is,the viscosity of latex paint decreases when subjected to shear force,making it easier to apply；After the shear force disappears,the viscosity can quickly recover,which helps prevent pigment precipitation and maintains good stability of latex paint during storage and use.
Water retention
Delayed drying:Hydroxyethyl cellulose has good water retention properties and can slow down the evaporation rate of moisture in latex paint.This helps to extend the drying time of the paint film,allowing sufficient time for latex paint to level after application,reducing defects such as brush marks and orange peel caused by rapid drying,and improving the appearance quality of the paint film.
Promoting film formation:During the drying process,the water retention effect allows latex particles to have more sufficient time to fuse and coalesce,forming a continuous and dense paint film,thereby improving the performance of the paint film,such as water resistance,scrub resistance,etc.
Dispersion and stability
Dispersible pigments:Hydroxyethyl cellulose helps to evenly disperse pigments in latex paint systems.It can adsorb onto the surface of pigment particles,forming a protective film that prevents pigment particles from aggregating with each other,maintaining good dispersion of pigments in the paint solution,thereby improving the covering power and color uniformity of latex paint.
Stable lotion:it can stabilize the lotion in the emulsion paint and prevent the demulsification of lotion during storage and use.It can increase the thickness of hydration layer around lotion particles,improve the stability of lotion,and ensure the stability of emulsion paint.
In the formulation of latex paint,the amount of hydroxyethyl cellulose is usually determined based on the specific type of latex paint,performance requirements,and other formulation components,generally around 0.1%-0.5%.Excessive use may cause the latex paint to become too viscous,affecting its construction performance；Too little may not achieve the expected thickening,water retention,and stability effects.
